Phoenix. 1985 & 1999.
78x48 inches.
Acrylic painting on board.
Shaped paintings have areas cut out so as to heighten their effect on the surrounding wall and add to the spatial ambiguity.
Each work is the result of weeks, months and sometimes years of over painting. I use chance, spontaneity and improvisation, but paint over more than I leave in. Due to over-painting and then simplification, Phoenix got its title from the fact that a new work came from the ashes of the old.
